Encrypted Filesystems

I just posted my notes on how to make encrypted filesystems Just Work(tm). Hopefully someone will pick it up and work on it.

Sod it

So, this morning, I come down to the parking deck of my building to see this

Sunroof?

there were another convertible in the same shape and all the cars on the rear deck had their windows broken. Since I watched Mystic River (which is shot in my neck of the woods, e.g. Somerville) the other day, my first thought was to contract the Savage Brothers to make things right with the pricks who did this. Now I’m a bit more calm, so I think I’ll resort to calling the police and my insurance company. America, Fuck Yeah.

Adventures in booting

I’ve been looking at reducing the login time and I’m down to 40 seconds. Which I think is pretty good. My writeup is here. Oddly there were no responses on the mailing list. Havoc seems to like it though.

Now to do a 0.4.2 release of hal.

A night out in town

Went out last night with krh and ssp. We were in downtown Lowell. It was smashing.

It creates a lot of fuzz and attention telling people you’re from Denmark; I think we got four or five free drinks on that account.

Of course, recovering, the day after, is never easy.

Recovering

I spent some time outside; that helped with the hangover.

Today and yesterday I’ve been looking into teaching LVM2 to HAL. The goal is simple; here’s one use case: Hooratio attaches two hard disks (say, mirrored or striped) and he should get a single entry in the /etc/fstab file and an icon in computer:///, automounting and all the other goodies we now have in the Utopia stack. I think that is somewhat easy to do through a callout plus some minimal changes to the hal daemon.

I’ve also been looking into dm-crypt; that’s a bit more tricky but entirely doable. Basically, what I’m looking for is gnome-volume-manager popping up a dialog asking for a passphrase. For bonus, throw in an emblem in Nautilus, possibly context menu options such as “Encrypt Filesystem”, “Decrypt Filesystem”, “Change Passphrase”, gnome-keyring integration.

Yesterday I bought an APC Biopod. It was kind of an impulse purchase (no open source Linux driver), well it was only $50, but I hope to find some time to write a small driver for getting the image from the device. It would be totally rad to have this work with gnome-keyring and other authentication mechanisms.

Oh, btw, I got the apartment in Somerville - I got the lease yesterday! Will be moving in tuesday or possibly already tomorrow monday. Also, krh is getting the apartment right next door as he also fancies the magnificent view of the Boston skyline. Will post pictures later.

Apartment

GO RED SOX

So, tomorrow at noon I’m going to meet with a broker to look at this apartment. Looks good: two bedroom, two bathroom, balcony and close to where all the action is. If all the stars align as I want them to, I might have it as soon as monday. That would rock. Wish me luck.

Fitting in

Woow. Finally got my act together after being over here in the US for about 4 weeks now. So I setup this blog so I can, uhm, broadcast information rather than answering individual mails. Which is good as the latter is somewhat timeconsuming. So, to do this the right way I’ve also subscribed a bunch of friends and family; I’m sure they’re all delighted about reading when I buy a new brand of toothpaste and whatever. We’ll see :-)

Things have been very hectic with work up until last week or so, with the freezing of what will become Fedora Core 3. This release features HAL and other components from the Utopia stack that I and others have been working on for the past year.

Yay! Plugging in the hard disk from my old FC1 server Just Works(tm).

I’m pretty happy with the outcome; big thanks go to Kay for all his patches and hard work especially on the volume_id library. He rocks.

The US is a strange and wonderful place at the same time. One thing is that I’ve become somewhat a baseball fan with Red Sox and their powerful comeback; it looks like they are going to beat the curse this year. Another thing is that I’m down to fifteen cigarattes a day. I guess that is a good thing.

For the record, my new car so much beats the one that krh bought :-)

Well, off to find a bar and see the Red Sox play.

A whole new chapter

Friday was my last day at Visionik, a business unit of NDS plc.

img_2256.jpg
My old office

I worked at Visionik for about five and a half years, so it wasn’t easy to say goodbye. It was a good evening friday though; beer with many good (now past) collegues and friends. I’ll miss Visionik and NDS and I plan to stay in touch; heh, we used to joke in the old days that the company was like Hotel California, “You can check out any time you want, but you can never leave”. Oh well :-)

For the next two months I’m going to work from home and in the end of September I’m going to relocate to US to properly start my new job in the desktop team at Red Hat. This is great stuff, I’m very happy about it! Initially, I’ll be working on getting the HAL stuff into the next release of Fedora Core. And I’m going to be hacking a lot on HAL ofcourse. Nice.

Two of my hacking areas at home :-)

Most of the paperwork is done, I’ve got a working permit and stuff, but there’s still some things left. I’m going to stash most of my physical belongings at my sisters new house at Fyn.

While going through my pictures I found this one from GVADEC

Stuff

Life

This weekend I went to my sisters housewarming in Ebberup, Fyn; I arrived late Friday post-work and came back late this Sunday afternoon, it was very relaxing; nice and insightful people; and draught beer; good stuff, all in all.

“Fork”

After the controversial story made headlines I dropped by to lurk on the #goneme channel on freenode and man, this beats Ricki Lake. Talk about misguided individuals; very entertaining, however from another, more correct perhaps, perspective it’s pretty sad; it could be interesting to figure out what is making these people tick. It’ll be interesting to see oGALAXYo lead this project, see how he will handle this. Stay tuned for the next installment! I know I will..

Stuck in a queue today

Project Utopia, HAL

Last week the proposed modules for GNOME 2.8 was discussed on desktop-devel-list and it seems that g-v-m, which will pull in HAL and stuff, received some pretty good comments. Great!

Otherwise I’ve been in Project Mgmt mode; right now I’m updating the spec; it’s more fun writing code though. I’ve felt kind of inactive the last week, maybe it’s just this that Joel describes so well.

And J5 is rocking on the 1:N stuff for GNOME VFS and Nautilus; he got the most important parts in before the freeze. Also Ray Strode have been hacking on fstab-update.sh in C. Sweet, just sweet. Oh, and there’s good discussion on the hfdb mailing list, also cool.

New Old Blog

Decided to use this blog instead of my journal at advogato. I need to be able to post photos :-)

Life

Been living in Lyngby, just 10km north of Copenhagen, for about 5 months

img_2187.jpg
The view from my kitchen

The apartment is kind-of nice, spacious and stuff, but the commute every day is boring. And the neighborhood is kind of for settled people. I miss the city.

Curling

Went to a curling tournament not too long ago in Oberstdorf, Germany. It was a 15 hour drive, about 1300 km south. That was tough. It was not a serious tournament, the theme of the trip was “Don’t you hate pants?”

img_2045.jpg
These people hate pants. They hate them so much

I played with a friend we call Shuffle (don’t ask) and these three norwegian girls I met for the first time

Amazed at the price differential on beer between Norway and Germany

Camilla is on the right, she’s very nice. I got her number :-)

Work

After Germany I had to go to the UK for two consecutive weeks, pulling 12 hour days. That was not a lot of fun. Went to the pub a few times with good collegues though. Then I went to Seoul in Korea

img_2191.jpg
From the Marriott looking north

It was my second time going, I was there in late January for the first time. It was also long days.

img_2193.jpg
Somewhere in Seoul

I managed to see the first game that Denmark played in the EURO 2004, live by satellite. Nice.

GVADEC

GUADEC was nice, I wrote about that here. Good to finally meet Joe after having exchanged a lot of mail with him.

img_2207.jpg
Joe has made up his mind about wireless scanning and HAL

It was also nice to meet Kay

HAL

Got my patch for integration HAL and GNOME VFS merged. Also, Jimmac already produced icons for gnome-icon-theme. Way cool!
